Botanical name: Sambucus nigra L.
Healing power:
- The Elder flowers are used to make tea in order to sweat at feverish colds.
- Elder flower tea is used at rheumatism and gout,
- Elder flowers for cleansing the blood in case of skin diseases and body odour.
- Elder flowers not only help for bad skin. They also relieve pain of skin inflammatory.
- Elder berries help in case of sun burn.
- Juice made out of elder berries is used as laxtive.
How to use:
Pick the flowers and dry them. Out of the berries juice or mush is made.
Recipe for the tea:
Pour 1/2 litre boiling water on 1 dessert spoon elder flowers. Wait 10 minutes.
To relieve rheumatic trouble, drink 1 cup elder flower tea for a time of 3 weeks 3 times per day.
Never eat the berries raw, but boiled as juice or mush. If you don´t boil them, the berries can cause nausea.
Preparation of a face compress against bad skin:
Pour 1/2 litre boiled water on 25 g elder flowers. Wait 15 minutes. Then pass it through a sieve. Put the warm liquid on the compress and lay the compress on your face for 10 minutes.
The pores are opened by the ingredients of elder in order to remove very carefully spots and blackheads.
Elder berries against sun burn:
Fresh berries are squashed and applied on the burned skin. If you haven´t got fresh berries, you take elder berry juice.
Description of the plant:
The elder is a shrub which reaches a height up to 7 m. It´s typical characteristic are the marrow containing branches and it´s shriveld bark.
From May to June the elder gets white-yellow flowers and in autumn the black-violet beeries.
You find elder on the edge of the forest, on clearings and dumps. It doesn´t need much soil.
Very often in Europe you find elder shrubs in the near of cowsheds and farmhouses, because of superstition people thought that the housegod lived in the shrub.
