The name Sutherlandia frutescens was given to honor the english settler, called James Sutherland.
Cancer bush grows wild in the South of Africa and stands extreme living conditiones.
Cancer bush belongs to the family of the papilionaceae and reaches a height up to 1,00 m. In spring it blooms and in late summer it gets green pods, which are puffed-up. Therefore the plant also is called ballon pea.
