The natural habit of the tea plant ia Assam in India. As late as 300 before Christ leaves of the tea plant have been used as medicine by making mushy soup out of them. Just in the time between 600 and 900 Anno Domini tea became national beverage of the Chinese. In Japan tea gained in importance about 800 Anno Domini. The Arabs brought the tea about 1550 to Europe.
Nowadays in the following countries tea is cultivated:
India, China, Sri Lanka, Kenia, Indonesia, Turkey, Japan, Russia, Iran, Argentina, Bangladesh and Malawi.
The teaplant grows as a tree which reaches a height up to 6 m, but is cultivated as a shrub by cutting the branches, for better harvesting.
The leaves are lanceolate, alternate and evergreen, little serrated, a bit leather and 4 to 10 cm long.
The tea shrub gets white 3 cm big flowers. They are building roundish capsules with 1 to 3 seeds with a diameter of 1,5 cm.
The teaplant needs temperatures of about 18 to 28 °C and regular rain.
The best areas of cultivation are the altitudes about 500 - 2000 m. In lowlands the teaplant doesnīt grow well. Propagation:

The branches of the teaplant have to be cutted very often in order to grow as a shrub up to 1 m. Harvest:
From 4th to 12th year the leaves are picked.The teaplant still gets older.
Picked are the young leaves in China and Japan 3 to 5 times every 6 weeks, in order to give the plant the time to rest.
In Indonesia and India the leaves are picked up to 15 times in the highlands, up to 30 times in the lowlands.
Then they are brought in airy houses for drying. The fermented product is the black tea. The production of green tea is without fermentation. Ingredients:
