The European Acorus calamus L. is poisonous and contains the carcinogen cis-isoasarone.
The North American variety Acorus calamus americanus lacks the carcinogen.

How to use:
The rhizome is digged frome June to autumn, then cleaned and dried.
For external use you can also use the skin of the rhizome, for internal use you have to remove the skin. The rhizome taste bitter.
Recipe for the Calamus tea:
Pour 1/8 litre boiling water on 1 dessert spoon Calamus root , let it draw for 20 minutes, then pass it through a sieve. Drink 1 cup of Calamus root tea 2 times per day.
Pregnant women shouldīt drink Calamus tea.

Calamus flowers from June to July as a spadix. The plant needs a marshy, moist location and reaches a height up to 1 m. You find it at lakes and ditches.
