But also the parts above ground are very valuable for the health.
In case of kidney stones it is warned for excessive consumption of Asparagus, because the saponines irritate the kidneys.
As well Asparagus is not recommendable at high uric acid or gout, because the purines in the Asparagus are changed in the body to uric acid. Description of the plant:
The original habits of Asparagus are the Mediterranean Area and Near East. Asparagus grows perennial. In April out of the rhizome sprout stems as thick as a finger, which are cutted subterranean (The white Asparagus). If you let Asparagus grow, the plant builds 1,20 m high filigree, branched, green stems.
Asparagus has got male and female plants. The female plants get red, poisonous berries, which contain the seed.
Sorts:
We know the white Asparagus, which has to be cut subterranean, the green Asparagus, which has to be cut above ground and the violet Asparagus. At the last one, the top of the shoots have to look some centimetres out of the earth before you cut them. Propagation:
Asparagus doesnīt have to be harvest in the first 2 years. Otherwise strong plants arenīt built. The location should be sunny and warm, the soil sandy and humous, well drained. The soil should have the possibility to warm up quickly. From March to April sow the seeds in a cold frame in a distance of 10 cm in 1 cm deep rows. The row distance should be 20 cm.
In next spring the young plants are transplanted to their finally location. This place should be well dunged with dung or compost.
To cultivate white Asparagus, at first you have to dig 30 cm deep and 45 cm wide ditches. The distance between the ditches should be 1,20 m.
The ditches are filled with dung. Then there are thrown up little hills, on which you plant the Asparagus. Lay the roots in longitudinal direction, because Asparagus always grows in one direction. The ditches have to be open in the first year, in the second year they are filled even and in the third year a 40 cm high dike has to be thrown up.
Green Asparagus can be sowed like white Asparagus, but green Asparagus doesnīt need dikes, because of above ground cutting.
Dig the white Asparagus, when there are crevices on earthīs surface.
Cut green Asparagus, when the plants are about 15 cm long. Asparagus can grow up to 15 years at one and the same place. At commercial cultivation the fields are given up after 5 years. Ingredients:
